Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were working "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior official commented the incident made him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
