Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
