A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
